A Day Running in Black and White

So, after a long Wednesday in the city, I find myself sitting on a bar stool at Burp Castle on Saint Mark’s Place.

Already everything seems dizzy, surreal, like a day running in black-and-white:

—Took care of a sick friend on the Upper East Side,

—Picked up Ronen from a day of meetings,

—Found myself stopped by Astor Place watching through my rearview mirror as Ronen meandered through a film shoot (typical),

—Drank raspberry Snapple,

—Bumped into the mystic astrophysicist girl from the Levi Okunov after-party at Chulent, and

Now a tiny bar with tall beer glasses and the buzz of the city outside. Kenyatta to my left, Ronen and Adam across the table.

The conversation shifts quickly like the day – from déjà vu to Sociology to female body builders.

And then the question of linear progression: Is society really improving? Are we better now than they were then? Are we being chronocentric? Yes, no, maybe. Well, what about science?

The words are a slow volley between Kenyatta and Adam. And their voices are low, pensive. Still, there’s laughter lurking behind all the gravity of the talk.

I’m quiet, listening, absorbing and in the shadows, the colors, the tones, the topic of conversation – a feeling suddenly – a knowledge, almost – that all this is my perspective sitting close-up to a screen watching another scene from Coffee and Cigarettes.

Just without the coffee. Or the cigarettes.
